TNE in Central Asia, South Caucasus and Western Balkans

This study explores the transnational education (TNE) landscape in seven countries in the 'Wider Europe' region:

  • Central Asia: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan
  • South Caucasus: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia
  • Western Balkans: Albania, Serbia.

These countries present a diverse set of demographic and socio-economic contexts, and a variety of interactions with UK higher education through TNE. Despite the fact that the region overall is relatively underrepresented in terms of UK TNE, the study highlights very real areas of growth potential in all countries, with Central Asia and Georgia in particular offering distinct opportunities for UK TNE development.

The study was carried out with a combination of data mapping, desk research and interviews with stakeholders (local and UK) who were key to the existing TNE landscape in each country.
