ReCycle Cyclothon at IIT Mumbai - a GREAT 'green' initiative in India

On 4 October 2015, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, hosted ReCycle Cyclothon, a new social initiative aimed at spreading awareness about global warming. The Cyclothon formed a part of IIT’s Techfest, Asia’s largest science and technology festival.

The British Council , India partnered with the premier educational institute for this inspiring initiative. Colin Wells, Deputy Head of Mission, British Deputy High Commission, Mumbai, was the chief guest of honour who inaugurated the Cyclothon and felicitated the winners. Srikanth Kidambi, the Indian badminton player and currently the highest ranked Indian men’s player in the international circuit with a world ranking of 3, was also present during the event.

The event saw participation from close to 900 people including college students, academia, representatives from the British Council and the British High Commission, as well as other partners of the Cyclothon.

The event included discussions on the UK India partnership in the areas of environment and pollution reduction where Colin Wells highlighted key initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability amongst the students in the UK universities and colleges.

Talking about the campaign, Colin said, “We are delighted to partner with IIT Bombay for ReCycle Cyclothon, a truly inspiring initiative to promote health and fitness amongst the youth and highlight the importance of environmental protection. India and the UK share a close partnership in the areas of environment and pollution reduction. In UK universities and colleges, we promote similar initiatives aimed at promoting environmental sustainability amongst the students. Additionally, the UK offers a number of specialized as well as short-term courses on environment and sustainability across its universities.”.

He further added, “We strongly believe that if all stakeholders come together through community participation to create a great awakening of environmental conservation and protection, we can give our future generations a better tomorrow.”
