ASEAN’s Creative Economies: Educating Tomorrow’s Leaders

British Council, Thailand together with the Office of the Education Council, successfully held a conference on ASEAN's Creative Economies on 6 and 7 September 2012 at the Landmark Hotel, Bangkok.

The purpose of the conference was to share best practice and the lessons across the nation from policy makers, education leaders and entrepreneurs on the way to accomplishing economic growth with a higher education, government and business sector support.

Forty one distinguished speakers gathered at the conference to share experiences over two days of the conference. The speakers included Dr Gwang Jo-Kim, the Director of UNESCO, Thailand, Dr Porametee Vimolsiri, Deputy Secretary General, Office of National Economic and Social Development, Prof Richard Snell, International Liaison, Birmingham City University, UK, and Mr Duangrit Bunnag, Duangrit Bunnag Architect Limited – DBALP.

Over 300 participants from across East Asia including Thailand, Hong Kong, Cambodia, Vietnam, and also from UK, were drawn to attend the conference where they had an opportunity to share their understanding, create networking and stimulate discussions.

“Human resource development needs education reformation that facilitates Creative Economies focusing on the role of education and ASEAN collaboration. Creative Economy is defined as “Ideas + Entrepreneurship”, was the opening keynote speech by Associate Professor Piriya Pholohirul, PhD, Associate Professor of Economics and Associate Dean of the International College of NIDA.

With wide ranging sessions from the keynote speakers, the conference broadened the audience’s appreciation of the importance of creative economies and the realisation that this recognition and with international collaboration, creative economies can be successfully and sustainably harnessed.

Creative economies will be further discussed on the global stage at the Global Education Dialogue in Singapore and the British Council annual conference; Going Global 2013 in Dubai.
