UK-Indonesia Joint Research Funding Opportunity in Addressing COVID-19 with scheme Newton Institutional Links – KLN 2020 Research Grant

British Council is the delivery partner for Newton Fund’s people pillar which includes Newton Institutional Links and other various opportunities in research and innovation. We are inviting joint applications from UK – Indonesia universities for Newton Institutional Links – KLN 2020 Research Grant.

This year’s theme is Addressing COVID-19 with wide spectrum of disciplines:

  1.  Energy
  2.  Health
  3.  Transportation
  4.  Marine
  5.  Multidisciplinary and Cross-Sectoral
  6.  Social Humanities, Arts, Education
  7.  Engineering Product
  8.  Food

We will fund 5 best UK – Indonesia research partnership project proposals. The joint research project should be led by 1 UK principal investigator and 1 Indonesia principal investigator plus research team members, where they will be working as 1 team.

Benefits for UK institutions:

  1. Receive a research grant to develop their research. Newton Institutional Links – KLN 2020 provides up to GBP 80,000 plus IDR 650,000,000 where Newton Fund will fund UK university while Indonesia national partner, Ristekbrin, will fund Indonesian university. Funding mobilization between university is allowed.
  2. Increase university’s financial sustainability as newton IL grants allows permanent staff cost up to 30%
  3. Opportunity to grow their primary and secondary data in the world’s largest biodiversity, Indonesia

Some contexts about Indonesia science landscape:

  • Indonesia researchers are productive. In 2018, Indonesia is the county with highest volume in term of document in south east esia region and number 7 in Asia region
  • Science & research budget have been gradually increased – more research grants opportunity is accessible to researchers in Indonesia. On top of grants by Ministry of Research, Technology & National Research Agency, the education endowment fund for research is now also accessible.
  • Indonesian researchers are very keen to work with international partners as ambition to publish articles in more international journals has been increasing rapidly over the years
