Tender for training course: “Effective English Medium Instruction – tools and principles for academic faculty teaching staff”

The opportunity:

The University of Rostock is inviting proposals for a 5-day course to cover “Effective English Medium Instruction – tools and principles for academic faculty teaching staff”

Course participants:

Up to 15 teaching staff drawn from the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences within the university, who will be responsible for the future delivery of faculty academic programmes through English

Course structure, delivery, length, date and location:

Modular, 5 days, full-time, face-to-face, onsite in Rostock, to take place on dates to be agreed within university winter semester October 2021 to January 2022 (Covid-19 travel restrictions permitting)

Themes to be addressed: 

General approaches to English Medium Instruction

  • Advantages of EMI in Higher Education. Teaching strategies to facilitate comprehension
  • Believing in bilingualism and making it work in the classroom
  • Management of the multilingual classroom: experiences, strategies and challenges
  • Challenges of English-Medium Instruction in university lectures
  • Basic interpersonal communication skills

Planning and Assessment

  • Lesson planning
  • Implementing and evaluating written tasks in the bilingual classroom.
  • Material design

Materials and resources

  • Adapting teaching materials
  • Use of ICTs (Information and communication technology) in bilingual higher education
  • Use of E-ELP (European Language Portfolio) or Europass

Experiences in plurilingual classrooms

  • Classroom experiences
  • Teaching in English to classes with a high number of students: alternatives to facilitate participation and communication
  • Experiences in the planning and implementation of subject specific strategies

Resources and strategies

  • Using virtual tools 
  • Resources and strategies to develop proactive teaching material in the bilingual classroom
  • Design and use of educational resources to promote interaction when working in small groups 
  • Finding resources for teaching in English and enhancing student involvement and participation

Course provider responsibilities:

Materials design, course delivery, trainer fee, trainer travel arrangements and costs, trainer accommodation arrangement and costs
