Study abroad familiarisation tour to UK for US advisers

The British Council USA is pleased to launch a study abroad familiarisation tour of the UK’s higher education institutions for US-based study abroad advisers during the week of 18 – 22 November 2019. We are looking for five institutions in England and Wales to host the advisers for a one-day visit during that week.

Our objective is to highlight fee-paying and exchange study abroad options (semester, one-year or short-term) for American university students in the UK. Tour participants will gain a deeper understanding of the UK higher education system and academic system and experience the culture and sites of interest in the UK. Potential tour participants include Education Abroad and Global Studies Directors, Program Administrators, Faculty and Directors and other specialized advisers and professionals working in direct‐enrolling, exchange, faculty‐lead, and other programs that include international mobility at US universities and community colleges. We are aiming to have 15-20 participants on the trip.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

The British Council is seeking five universities in England and Wales to host US advisers for one-day visits to showcase their study abroad opportunities. A strong visit will:

  • Showcase the strength of your institution’s facilities and student accommodations through a campus tour
  • Include meetings with members of the International Office to talk about study abroad and exchange programmes available to US students, the academic system, programming for study abroad students, health and safety information, information about scholarships, etc.
  • Involve interaction with current US study abroad students if possible
  • Meetings with faculty that are popular with study abroad students such as Politics, History, Economics, English Literature or a faculty that the university is particularly well-known for and would like to highlight
  • Provide a hot lunch
  • Include a cultural, historical or other touristic opportunity in the afternoon to see the surrounding area

Visits are suggested to run from 9:00 – 15:00, with an afternoon visit to the surrounding area from 15:00 – 17:30 or 18:00. Joint proposals will be considered and a diverse range of institutions will be selected.

SHOWCASE INSTITUTIONS

We are accepting applications from universities in England and Wales. We will accept applications based on the strength of the proposed programme and on logistical feasibility. Showcase university spaces are strictly limited to five places.

Fee: £2,850 GBP + VAT

The fee helps to subsidize local transportation during the tour, welcome meal for the participants, tour materials, and British Council staff time and travel. In addition to the fee, showcase institutions would be expected to provide a hot lunch and cover any costs associated with the afternoon activity to see the surrounding area.
