Shanghai University seeks UK partner to set up joint college in Shanghai, East China

Shanghai University (SHU) is looking for a UK partner to set up a joint college focusing on film and television related studies at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This is in response to a multi-million dollar government initiative to establish a creative industry cluster in the area surrounding the university. The joint college is to be located within Shanghai University’s campus.

Introduction of Chinese partner

Shanghai University was established in 1922 and is a Project 211 university, meaning it is a national key university and part of reforms aimed at raising research standards and cultivating national development strategies. It is the largest university in Shanghai by student population, with 26,000 undergraduates, 8,000 postgraduates and more than 2,700 international students. Currently, the university’s 30 schools and departments offer more than 250 degree programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level.

In contrast to most other universities in China, Shanghai University has adopted a three semester system that runs across two terms. Most courses start with a general curriculum in the first year, while subject specific courses are delivered from the second year onwards.

Shanghai University’s School of Film and Television Technology is among China’s top five in the sector. It has a range of teaching centers, including a TV studio with editing and post-production facilities and a three-dimensional animation laboratory, and enjoys strong connections to the local industry. Shanghai University now wants to expand its offering in this subject area by setting up a joint college with a UK institution.
