The British Council in Ireland is delighted to welcome Gill Roe of Southern Cross Consulting to present highlights from her qualitative research which explores the push and pull factors relating to UK students’ choices to study in Ireland.

This session will be moderated by the British Council's Global Head of Education Insights, Research and Hubs, John McNamara, who will also share insights into recent British Council research on pathways to undergraduate study in the UK.

About the research

In the centenary year of the Common Travel Area (which protects the free movement of people and goods across Ireland and the UK), we recognise that there has been an uneven and somewhat volatile enrolment pattern in UK students at Irish higher education over the last number of years. Conversely, Ireland is now the UK’s largest EU market for new enrolments to higher education institutions.

This is why the British Council in Ireland and the British Embassy in Dublin have published the Higher Education Mobility Report on HE student flows between the UK and Ireland.

This research explores the factors that UK students take into consideration when making the choice to study in Ireland and helps to throw some light on the motivations and factors that affect UK students’ choice to study in Ireland. It includes surveys and in-depth interviews with UK and Irish students; and also tracks and analyses trends time in student flows between the UK and Ireland with data reflecting a period from 2017-2022. The report can be accessed here.
