Hainan University was founded in 1958, and it is the only 211 university in Hainan province. The university runs three campuses, namely Haidian, Chengxi, and Danzhou. Its main campus is located on Haidian Island of Haikou, the capital city of Hainan Province. Hainan University highlights four aspects: tropic, ocean, special administrative region and tourism. It offers 9 categories of disciplines in philosophy, economics, law, literature, natural sciences, agriculture, and engineering, and management.

Hainan University hopes to build up a 2+2 joint programme with an established UK university in the subject of Food Science.
