China University of Petroleum (UPC) is looking for a UK partner to design and deliver a 4-week EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) teacher training programme for 20 academic lecturers of UPC, taking place in the UK from end of July to end of August 2017.

Opportunity

China University of Petroleum (UPC) is looking for a UK partner to deliver the teacher training programme to a group of 20 academic lecturers (mostly around 35-40 years old, teaching science and engineering majors). The programme would be expected to strengthen the teaching and pedagogy capability of using English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for academic teachers and researchers selected from UPC, focusing on their English language competency and teaching methodologies of EMI.

Objectives:

• develop a good understanding of the communication principles that underlie academic teaching with English as the medium of instruction (EMI)
• improve the quality of communication with students in the classrooms, through more confident and effective teaching in English
• through micro-teaching sessions analysing and reviewing current teaching practices, acquire advanced communication skills in English
• develop participants’ ability to publish papers in English .

Time proposed: preferably 30 July – 26 August 2017 (20 training days) 

Budget reference: 121 GBP/person per day

Requirements

The UK partner should be experienced in delivering training courses on EMI (English as a medium of instruction)and will be expected to design and deliver a suitable 4-week (20 days) training programme including the below modules:

• English communicative skills
• English teaching methodologies
• bilingual curriculum design
• managing teaching activities
• paper publishing in English

The UK partner will also be expected to provide:

• accommodation (preferably university student accommodation with en-suite single rooms)
• three meals a day (including arrangements for weekends meals)
• extra-curricular activities and cultural visits
• the opportunity to practice teaching with UK students or other international students
• airport pick up/drop off and local daily travel/commuting arrangements  
• a letter of invitation to support the visa application process
• a certificate of completion for each participant at the end of the training.

 China University of Petroleum will provide the following services:

• selection of teachers in China
• provision of supervisors to assist all teachers throughout the training
• coordination of teachers’ UK visa applications and international ticket booking
• pre-departure briefing and guidance for teachers before they leave for the UK.
