Call for UK institutions to contribute to seminar on UK university admissions policy in Beijing, China

The National Education Examinations Authority (NEEA) of China is calling for UK institutions to contribute to a seminar on UK university admissions policy by sharing their expertise on admissions policy, enrolment practices and selection criteria with their Chinese counterparts in Beijing on the afternoon of 22 October 2015.

Brief introduction of the NEEA

The NEEA is affiliated with the Ministry of Education and has strong influence over China’s education sector. It is responsible for the administration of China’s national college entrance examination (gaokao) and the development of related test material.

Until recently, gaokao was the sole criterion in student admission for China’s higher education institutions, but ongoing reforms to the university enrolment system will see Chinese universities gain more autonomy in undergraduate admissions requirement. The NEEA has a central role to play in the reform and is keen to facilitate exchanges of best practice between Chinese and UK education experts and university representatives in the area of student admission.

Opportunity

UK institutions are invited to join the seminar and give presentations on their institutions’ admissions policy, recruitment practices and selection criteria with the aim of improving understanding in this area and of related trends among their counterparts in China.

This will also be a good opportunity to learn about China’s education sector and the ongoing gaokao reform in China and to factor in any potential impact for UK’s current recruitment of Chinese students.   There will also be time to network and explore potential collaborations.

Participants from China will include:

·         admission and recruitment officials from 10 prestigious universities in Beijing, such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Renmin University (TBC);

·         international officers from 10 top ranking high schools in Beijing, such as Beijing No. 4, No. 8, and No. 101 high school, as well as the affiliated high schools of Peking University, Renmin University, and Beijing Normal University (TBC).

Please note, attendance of the seminar will be limited to five UK institutions.
