East Asia Schools Mission 2021-22: Hong Kong Virtual School Roadshow

UK higher education institutions are invited to participate in the East Asia Schools Mission 2021-22. The mission is tailored to provide UK higher education institutions with a direct platform to target international school students, promote their offering to prospective undergraduate students, and engage with key counsellors in Hong Kong and Thailand.

The first tour will be taking place in Hong Kong on 13 – 17 September 2021 and follow by The Thailand International School Tour ( blended) in January/February 2022.

Hong Kong Virtual School Roadshow

* Representatives must be university staff. Agents or consortium organisations are not permitted.

* Only one representative from each university is allowed to attend the career counsellor networking event.

This virtual event is timed to coincide with the period when Year 13 / HKDSE Secondary 6 students are making final choices for university entry, and when Year 12 students / HKDSE Secondary 5 will be beginning the decision-making process. Students from lower grades (Year 11 / HKDSE Secondary 4) may also be invited.

International schools are a major source of recruitment for UK HEIs. At the same time we recognise the growing demand from DSS (direct subsidy scheme) schools offering both HKDSE and IB curriculum (A-level in some cases) therefore we will identify these local schools with potential to be included in the programme.

The Hong Kong team will select 15 - 20 local schools and bring a delegation of 20 UK universities to meet prospective students, parents, and career counsellors/university guidance advisors virtually.

*Update: currently 22 local schools have registered for the HK tour, including 14 international curriculum schools and 8 DSE schools.

Format of Event

The planned activities are two-fold:

B2B event: Career counsellors networking event (09 September TBC)
Platform: Hopin
Estimated total numbers of attendees: 20-30

The networking event will be open to all career counsellors/teachers from Hong Kong and Macau. It offers a great opportunity for participating institutions to connect with career counsellors from both local and international curriculum schools and understand emerging student market trends. The planned activities include:

Sharing sessions
Networking event (in the speed-dating style)
Online counselling

B2C event: Study UK Universities Online Roadshow 2021 (13-17 September)
Platform: Zoom
Estimated total numbers of target audiences to reach: 1,500 – 2,000
Although physical visits to local schools are still not feasible due to the city’s social distancing restrictions, given Hong Kong’s Covid-19 situation being stabilised, the Education Bureau had granted local schools to resume in-person classes for all pupils on a half-day basis from this May.

The Hong Kong team decided to pilot this year’s UK universities roadshow to be operated in the hybrid event style. We would encourage host schools to group students to attend this virtual event at a suitable venue at a specific time with AV/IT facilities at their school during school hours. However, some of students/parents may join us individually via their devices if it is difficult for counsellors to physically facilitate them to attend on the day.

During the evening time, a series of webinars featuring topics such as introduction to UK education system, admission process (UCAS), personal statement writing, career support and other subject specific topics etc. will be organised by the British Council throughout the roadshow week. After the webinars, there will be allocated time for students and parents to visit university representatives in virtual breakout rooms should they have any further queries.

In addition, prospective students and parents can also book a one-to-one meeting with participating institutions during or after the roadshow week via the hyperlinks or contact details provided by the institutions. The information will be shared with them prior to the roadshow event.

Online counselling in the virtual breakdown rooms

Benefits to UK Institutions

Hybrid approach – a new way of engaging with prospective students
to enhance the level of engagement with prospective students, we will group host schools and invite them to meet participating universities at various times. Career counsellors will also be invited to join their students and help them engage with university representatives proactively.

Generating quality student leads for the 2022-23 intake and beyond
it is estimated to meet approximate 1,500 – 2,000 audiences from 20-25 schools within the 5-day roadshow period. Prospective students will be asked to give their email consent where we will be able to share their contact details after the fair with a third party. The hyperlinks to participating universities’ appointment booking websites will also be shared prior to the roadshow week.

Networking opportunity - deepen relationships with key influencers
This year’s career counsellors networking event will be hosted via a virtual event platform called Hopin where participating institutions will have a virtually branded booth for profile raising and network with career counsellors. This event will be promoted to over 200 career counsellors/teachers from Hong Kong and Macau.

Cancellation Policy:

Cancellation fees will be charged for withdrawal from this event, as of the date of receipt of notice of withdrawal:

- 50 per cent of the full exhibition cost for withdrawals received on or after 11 August 2021

- 100 per cent of the full exhibition cost for withdrawals received on or after 18 August 2021

A total of 20 places are available for this campaign and applications will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. The deadline for applications is on Wednesday 18 August 2021.
