In May 2017 Thailand announced plans to encourage “high-potential” overseas universities to set up branch campuses in the country, especially in the Eastern Economic Corridor – a special economic zone covering three provinces close to Bangkok. This was followed a few months later by announcements that two overseas universities – Carnegie Mellon University from the US and National Taiwan University – would set up branch campuses in the country. These are the first officially recognised branch campuses to be established in Thailand.

The British Council conducted research to better understand the opportunities for transnational education in Thailand – including both the prospects for new UK branch campuses and the environment for other forms of TNE such as joint and dual degree partnerships.  The report provides valuable information to UK HEIs looking to set up provision in Thailand or collaborate with Thai universities.
