Singapore’s educational policy has long-embraced the tenets of continuous learning – moving away from traditional ‘front-loading’ of education, to providing multiple entry points for the workforce to continually upskill and reskill during their working lives.
The nation-wide initiative is led by SkillsFuture (SSG), and brings together policy makers, academia, employers, unions and the workforce, for a cohesive and concerted effort towards preparing for the uncertainties of the future.
SSG’s annual skills report provides details of priority economic sectors and skills needed to thrive in these sectors. Emerging domains in the Green Economy, the Digital Economy and the Care Economy, as well as Critical Core Skills that cut across multiple sectors are listed in the report.
The Institutes of Higher Learning (the six universities, five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education – collectively called the IHLs) are an integral part of the continuing education and training (CET) ecosystem in Singapore.
UK universities seeking collaborations and partnerships with the IHLs would benefit from focussing on the priority economic sectors, and exploring options of co-designing and/or co-delivering training programmes or micro-credentials.
