Personal safety has risen in importance as a factor influencing international student choice when selecting study destinations. This research report from the British Council's Education Intelligence service examines student perceptions on which host destinations are considered safe and why the UK comes out on top in a global online poll.

Student Insight Hot Topics, a series that explores timely issues in international higher education, bases analysis on student decision-making data collected via a survey that has captured over 160,000 student responses in more than 200 countries. The Rise in Global Safety Concerns investigates the reasons why student opinion on personal safety has changed over time, the impact media coverage of student-centered violence and discrimination has had on students' views, and how the free flow of "word of mouth" information online that highlights personal opinion has heightened overall student awareness.

This report is now available at the Education Intelligence online store. If your institution has an EDUCATION INTELLIGENCE subscription, you can receive a discount up to 22 per cent on report purchases in the new STUDENT INSIGHT HOT TOPICS research series.
