Taiwan is committed to advancing its academic and cultural ties with UK through the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship program, MOFA is offering 100 scholarship for British students. And universities in Taiwan are willing to host incoming UK students on the Turing Scheme. The universities are also able to discussing reciprocal arrangements for student exchange and mobility with the potential UK partners, in term of everything is running normal in Taiwan during the COVID-19 period.
- Purpose – what is on offer for students from the UK
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has set up the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship programme with a view to encouraging Taiwanese and European universities to establish or expand academic cooperation via institution-to-institution partnerships, and would like to attract more students from Great Britain to apply to come to Taiwan to study Mandarin and engage in exchanges with Taiwanese students.
- The Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship programme is open to British students too who wish to apply for a scholarship to study in Taiwan regardless of student status (degree or non-degree) or university department, and disciplines are not limited to the Mandarin studies or sinology. The programme allows European students to pursue further studies in Taiwan in their original fields of interest and expertise, which will enable them to contribute to the cooperation between Taiwanese and European industries in the future. This will allow Taiwan to make a positive addition to people-to-people exchanges between Taiwan and Europe, in line with the European Union’s Europe-Asia Connectivity Strategy and the United Kingdom’s vision for Global Britain.
- In addition, MOFA hopes the scholarship programme will encourage Taiwanese universities to further build their capacity in bilingual teaching and establish bilingual environments. Furthermore, when scholarship students are in Taiwan, MOFA hopes they can help with English teaching to enhance the English language proficiency of Taiwan’s general public, and assist Taiwan in achieving its policy goal to become a Bilingual Nation by 2030.
- What is on offer for young people in the UK?
- In 2021, MOFA will focus on European countries that have set up representative offices in Taiwan. MOFA envisages the programme to be gradually expanded to other European countries especially expecting more talent students from the UK.
- MOFA is formally inviting Taiwanese universities to use institution-to-institution models of cooperation to contact partner universities (sister schools or other universities with existing bases of cooperation) in target countries, and jointly submit project proposals. MOFA will then designate the quotas for each target country based on its annual budget and instruct relevant representative offices to assist universities in setting up institution-to-institution links and the publicity of the programme.
- MOFA will provide schools with a fixed amount of funding for each quota, which can be used flexibly, including providing students’ airplane tickets and accommodation, as well as the schools’ project-related expenses, but each student should be provided with a monthly stipend of at least NT$ 15,000 (approx. .

Taiwanese universities are keen to explore partnerships with potential UK universities which are participating in the Turing Scheme, to offer UK students the opportunity to undertake education mobility at the university in Taiwan in September 2021.
Universities in Taiwan are very welcoming to host incoming UK students on the Turing scheme. There is strong culture of active participation in various international mobility programme including MoE Taiwan and MoE Huayu Enrichment scholarship from Ministry of Education and are open to exploring reciprocal arrangements for student exchange and mobility with the potential UK partner.
