Background

The British Council, on behalf of the A.S.Hornby Educational Trust, invites submissions from UK universities to host Hornby scholars for one-year full-time masters in ELT or TESOL in the UK for the period 2018-2021. The A.S.Hornby Educational Trust was set up by A.S.Hornby in 1961 to further the advancement of the study of the English language and teaching and learning of English as a foreign language. The Trust fund has since supported a scholarship programme for teachers of English from round the world to study Masters in ELT in the UK. The Trust is a registered charity in the UK. The scholarship programme is managed by the British Council on behalf of the Trust. Hornby scholars are qualified practising English language teaching professionals, who work in the state or private sector, as teachers, teacher trainers or university lecturers. Most scholars come from sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. The scholarship experience in the UK should provide scholars with high quality professional development in issues relating to the theory and practice of English language teaching. They should receive a durable and positive impression of the UK, and develop leadership skills in advancing English language teaching in their countries.
