The development of personnel who possess global skills is one of the hottest topics in the Japanese media lately, and represents a major challenge for both the higher education sector and employers. According to a recent survey, the need for such personnel will more than double over the next five years, as Japanese industries outsource more and more of their operations and shift their focus to overseas markets, but issues such as poor English among Japanese HQ staff remain major barriers. The Ministry of Education allocated GBP 40 million in the 2012 budget to support the development of global personnel, meaning that there is growing demand for global career skills education from Japanese universities.

The British Council and UKTI will host a symposium on Global Skills to highlight the ways in which UK providers can meet this need:

Date: Thursday 13 September 2012
Time: 10.00 a.m. – 5.00 p.m.
Venue: Nikkei Hall, Tokyo, Japan
Target audience: Around 300 senior staff from Japanese industry, universities, study abroad agents, local training providers

In the plenary session, speakers from the Ministry of Education, Keidanren (the main employers’ body), leading UK companies and the UK higher education sector will address the key requirements for global personnel, and ways in which industry and higher education are responding to the challenge (some speakers remain TBC).

There are opportunities for UK institutions to speak for around 20 minutes in one of the breakout groups, as well as to host a booth at the event. Japanese universities are keen to find out more about the career-oriented education opportunities available to their students both in the UK and in Japan; and this event also offers a unique chance to reach HR staff from industry.
