China University of Petroleum (UPC) is looking for a UK partner to design and deliver a 4-week EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) teacher training programme for 20 academic lecturers of UPC, taking place in the UK from end of July to end of August 2017.
Opportunity
China University of Petroleum (UPC) is looking for a UK partner to deliver the teacher training programme to a group of 20 academic lecturers (mostly around 35-40 years old, teaching science and engineering majors). The programme would be expected to strengthen the teaching and pedagogy capability of using English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for academic teachers and researchers selected from UPC, focusing on their English language competency and teaching methodologies of EMI.
Objectives:
- develop a good understanding of the communication principles that underlie academic teaching with English as the medium of instruction (EMI)
- improve the quality of communication with students in the classrooms, through more confident and effective teaching in English
- through micro-teaching sessions analysing and reviewing current teaching practices, acquire advanced communication skills in English
- develop participants’ ability to publish papers in English .
Time proposed: preferably 30 July – 26 August 2017 (20 training days)
Budget reference: 121 GBP/person per day

Requirements
The UK partner should be experienced in delivering training courses on EMI (English as a medium of instruction)and will be expected to design and deliver a suitable 4-week (20 days) training programme including the below modules:
- English communicative skills
- English teaching methodologies
- bilingual curriculum design
- managing teaching activities
- paper publishing in English
The UK partner will also be expected to provide:
- accommodation (preferably university student accommodation with en-suite single rooms)
- three meals a day (including arrangements for weekends meals)
- extra-curricular activities and cultural visits
- the opportunity to practice teaching with UK students or other international students
- airport pick up/drop off and local daily travel/commuting arrangements
- a letter of invitation to support the visa application process
- a certificate of completion for each participant at the end of the training.
China University of Petroleum will provide the following services:
- selection of teachers in China
- provision of supervisors to assist all teachers throughout the training
- coordination of teachers’ UK visa applications and international ticket booking
- pre-departure briefing and guidance for teachers before they leave for the UK.

China University of Petroleum (UPC), located at Qingdao, Shandong Province, is a national key university directly affiliated to the Ministry of Education and a member of the “211 Project” and “985 innovation platform for preponderant discipline” universities. China University of Petroleum is a higher education institution co-constructed by the Ministry of Education, four leading petroleum and petrochemical companies (CNPC, SINOPEC, CNOOC, and CHEMCHINA) and the People’s Government of Shandong Province. China University of Petroleum has 12 schools as well as College of International Education, School of Military Reserve Officers, College of Distance and Continuing Education.

Please submit a training proposal and a quotation outlining all costs related to the proposed programme. The training proposal should include a sample schedule for four weeks (20 training days) and CVs of key trainers designated for this training programme. The quotation of the programme should include specific financial and programme arrangements for 20 delegates: training fee, insurance (if applicable), all related expenses for cultural activities and excursions, excluding international air-tickets, visa application fees and travel insurance.
Specific requirements as below:
- for accommodation, please include details of the university accommodation (self-catering single en-suite room with bathroom and internet connections)
- for transportation, please include airport transfer services and daily travel costs.
- for meals arrangements, please specify daily meals arrangements, including weekends
- for cultural visits, please list proposed locations and include the quotation for possible expenses on travel..
Please kindly note that the British Council will charge a 20 per cent management fee based on the tuition fee of the final programme. The management fee will cover frequent liaison between the UK provider and Chinese partner for facilitating the preparation of the programme and pre-training arrangements (e.g. pre-departure briefings, visa application and on-site support upon requests) as well as supporting for post-training follow-up and feedback report. Please include the management fee in the quotation separately after all other costs have been accounted for.
