The German government has recently updated its guidelines for its flagship combined loan and grant programme, BAföG. Previous rules meant that when the UK exited the EU eligible students from Germany could no longer receive this support for an entire course.

The revision means that students can apply for up to €5,600 towards tuition fees as well as up to just under €1,000 a month to cover living expenses for one-year Master’s programmes outside of the EU, i.e. including in the UK.

Although the BAföG programme is means-tested, the thresholds for taking it abroad are higher than for studying in Germany, so it is always worth students checking whether they are eligible.

It is still not possible to receive BAföG funding for an entire undergraduate degree.
