Xiamen University is set to become the first Chinese university with a wholly overseas campus after construction began on the 17th of October. The first students are expected to enrol in autumn 2015 with an initial 500 freshmen. They hope to grow to 5,000 students by 2020 with the eventual goal of teaching 10,000 students in a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The main campus will be located in Salak Tinggi, a 15-minute drive from Putrajaya, the federal administrative centre of Malaysia. Although the UK is currently a big player in transnational education in Malaysia, it has seen increasing competition in recent years from other countries who are also interested in moving in to this growing market.
