Millennials have been considered as today’s most puzzling generation. Although there are no precise dates on when the generation starts and ends, researchers generally refer to them as the people born at the dawn of a new age, between 1980 and 2000s, or the 15 to 35 year olds. In the Philippines, the millenials make up one-third of its population.
In terms of education, their motivations for going to college are: to get a good job after graduation, raise a good family, train in a specific career, be a committed lifelong learner, and to learn things that are personally interesting. The majors that they generally take to build on their career aspirations revolve around the following fields: engineering, business, hotel and tourism management, health sciences, and IT. Filipino millennials are bullish and ambitious about their careers as they believe they can bring more to the table and they are more digitally connected. Surprisingly, Filipino millenials are also more ambitious than their counterparts in other emerging markets and even more than those in developed countries. Close to 75 per cent still are willing to be uprooted and work abroad after graduation because of the higher pay. In relation, this Filipino generation’s life goals are to have a successful business of their own, to adopt green practices to protect the environment, and to raise a family.
