Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) invited a two member delegation from the world’s first Open University (OU) established in the UK in 1969 as a successful distance learning university for an exchange of knowledge to enhance quality of education.

The two Senior British academicians Dr. Nicholas Richard Watson and Mrs. Anna Childs met with the Vice Chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui.

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) is a public research university located in Islamabad and is regarded as one of the premier institutions of higher learning as well as research in the development of education. It is noted for its cost-effective policy to provide higher education at a minimum cost through a specialised university fund managed by the government.

British Council Islamabad sponsored the delegation’s visit to facilitate Allama Iqbal Open University’s partnership plan and improve its academic ranking to offer quality education to aspirants.

The delegation appraised the future development strategy of AIOU that involves promoting pioneering applied research, advanced curriculum, course materials, professional development, strengthening the support system for students and enhancing the delivery system by smart use of technology. 

UK Open University ranks first in the world for distance learning system with Allama Iqbal Open University ranking as first in Asia.

The exchange between UK Open University and Allama Iqbal Open University led to development of productive future plans involving effective research on society-related matters and improving literacy rate in Pakistan.

British Council Pakistan strives to support universities, institutions and other education decision makers in their advancement and partnership development strategies to consequently strengthen collaboration within local universities and UK institutions.

Trans-national education (TNE) is a growing market in Pakistan and recent data shows evidence of over 40 such programs running successfully in affiliation with British universities at undergraduate and graduate level, according to the  British Council. Overall, the UK takes about 65 per cent of the TNE market in Pakistan, at a clear majority.
