In line with the New Education Policy, Indian universities and colleges which are tagged as Institutions of Eminence (IoE) will be able to setup campuses in foreign campuses. The University Grant Commission has now laid down fresh guidelines for this.

In 2018 the Education Ministry had launched IoE scheme as per which 20 institutions were to be selected as IoE who will be granted complete academic and administrative autonomy. This will include 10 public and 10 private institutions. The list includes IISc, Bangalore and four IITs in public sector and institutions like BITS Pilani, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Vellore Institute of Technology etc in private sector.

The institutions can start with setting up three foreign campuses in five years and is expected to achieve 1:20 teacher- student ratio initially and by end of five years 1:10 teacher- student ration.

The British Council continue to work closely with Indian HEIs and government to understand more about this and other various activities around the NEP. We will keep the UK sector apprised on development around this in coming months.
