The three educational institutions: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, IIT- Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have kept up their steady performance and featured again in the top 200 ranking. They have been the top Indian universities as per the global rankings since 2017.
The Indian universities have done well on the research metric (measured as number of citations per faculty). It shows an upward shift, suggesting that the attention and approach towards research in the Indian higher education system is becoming favourable. Since 2021, the IISC Bangalore continues to strike perfect score of 100 for the research indicator.
The list of top 10 Indian universities in the overall rankings are IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IISC Bangalore, IIT-Madras, IIT-Kanpur, IIT-Kharagpur, IIT-Guwahati, IIT-Roorkee, University of Delhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Comments from British Council:
Most of the Indian higher education institutions in the 2022 rankings list are the country’s premier technical institutions and central universities, but India continues to have a comparatively small number of world-class universities compared to the country’s population.
This shortage is a major driver of demand for overseas study. This coupled with the introduction of the Graduate Route in the UK has meant that the number of students coming to the UK is growing even through the pandemic.
The improvements in research quality at India’s top universities suggest that there could be more potential for UK universities to work with these institutions on collaborative research projects.
