Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU), which Times Higher Education states has climbed the rankings tables by more than 100 places in four years, is to launch a new satellite campus in London later this year, in a move that will enable it to collaborate more closely with UK universities.
Imperial College London offers a joint medical school with NTU already, and they also partner with Cambridge for semiconductor and energy research, the University of Southampton for photonics, and also offer the premier Renaissance Engineering Programme (REP). NTU is also looking to also open up in San Francisco, Chicago, Stockholm and Shanghai.
NTU provost Freddy Boey said that a global mindset “…can be nurtured only through experiential learning. World-class research has to be interdisciplinary in nature and, because universities have different strengths, it makes sense to collaborate."
In addition, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) has opened a new campus in Singapore, in Changi, on 9 May. Now in its fourth year, SUTD has 386 students.
In other news, the Singapore Management University (SMU) is tipped for a S$20 million expansion to develop its campus in the city centre. The campus was built for 6,000 students but it is currently at 8,800. The expansion is also designed to make space for the School of Humanities that will be set up in the next few years.
These developments demonstrate the ability of Singapore’s universities to cultivate top collaborations with other universities around the world, while continuing to attract large numbers of quality students for their programmes.
