The arrest of former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, on 09 May 2023 by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) sparked widespread public demonstrations and unrest throughout the country.

In response to the escalating situation, the government has implemented a ban on demonstrations and gatherings of four or more people across the country. The government also shut down numerous social media applications and internet services in several cities, including the three major metropolitan areas (Lahore, Islamabad and Karachi).  While internet services have since been mostly restored, certain social media applications remain inaccessible, and the ban on gathering (known as Section 144) remains in place.

The disruptions resulted in schools being closed for 2-3 days, resulting in the local board examinations for grades 9 to 12 being cancelled in the week of 8 May 2023. Cambridge International, Pearson, University of London exams, and IELTS exams schedule in the same week were also temporarily cancelled, but have resumed since May 15, 2023.

British Council comments

The situation in Pakistan remains tense. Political unrest is adding to the existing economic challenges via higher inflation and currency depreciation. On the education front, schools have re-opened, academic activities have recommenced, and the GCE exams were quickly rescheduled and held.

It is expected that the result dates will remain unaffected, allowing students to receive their results on time.

It, however, cannot be taken as an indicator for normalcy to continue as the political atmosphere remains volatile and unpredictable.

British Council is keeping a close watch on developments and is in touch with key education partners - such as the examination bodies - to determine next steps and appropriate communication to students. We will communicate the further examination dates and results plans to candidates and their schools.

UK universities are advised to consult and refer to British Council channels (website, Facebook, twitter) and FCDO travel advice for updated information on the situation.  We will also share relevant updates on this website.  Considering these circumstances, it is crucial to extend extra care and support to Pakistani students, especially those studying in the UK.  Facilitating their needs and helping wherever possible will contribute to their well-being during this difficult period.
