Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Minister of State for Skill Development has recently declared that more than 11.7 million people were trained for various skills under the Skill India Mission. The numbers are exclusive of skill training programmes run by other ministries. Skill India is a campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2015. Under this initiative, the government aims to train over 400 million people in India in different skills by 2022. Currently, the program is working on supply driven model, where the youth is trained for skills as per their interest. The government plans to shift to demand model where the youth will be trained in skills that are being demanded by employers. This will ensure that the trained youth doesn’t remain unemployed.

The Skill India campaign is a joint investment by government as well as private players and has seen a transition as more and more corporates are expressing interest to join the campaign at different levels. The Skills India campaign is helping the youth to improve their employability.
