The government of Punjab plans to spend extensively on projects promoting higher education; starting with the opening of new universities in five cities of Punjab namely; Sialkot, Rahim Yar Khan, Faisalabad, Multan and Bahawalpur.

A budget of Rs. 12,000 million has been allocated for various projects under the Punjab Education Foundation with Rs. 3000 million set for Daanish Schools, Rs. 4000 million for Punjab Education Endowment Fund (PEEF) and Rs. 2000 million for the Lahore Knowledge Park.

British Council Pakistan has contributed actively in the Lahore Knowledge Park project.

The project aims to create a synergy between academia, research and development, industry and business both internationally and within Pakistan.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between British Council Pakistan and the Higher Education department with an aim to attract world renowned educational institutions and information and computer technology companies to set up their campuses and businesses for collaborative investment in Pakistan.

The Punjab budget for higher education will also cover funds for facilities in 49 colleges, establishment of 36 degree colleges including IT and engineering universities in Lahore under Public Private Partnership mode.

Under the school sector, the budget will be spent on creation of IT labs in 500 schools, construction of 12,500 extra class rooms in over-crowded schools, renovation of 4,063 school buildings, opening of 500 new primary schools, provision of internal merit based scholarships and teacher training.

The government of Punjab announced the annual budget for 2016/17 at Rs. 1681.41 billion with an allocation of Rs. 20 billion for agriculture sector, Rs. 1,584 million for social welfare and Rs. 7.5 billion for industrial development.
