Colombia’s congress and President have approved the creation of a new government body (Superintendence of Higher Education) to ensure the quality of higher education in Colombia.
The President of the Republic, Juan Manuel Santos approved the Law of Inspection and Monitoring of higher education on Dec. 23, 2014, which aims to guarantee the right of the students to access quality education, with full respect for the autonomy of higher education institutions (HEIs).
"This historic Act finally gave a go-ahead for the Ministry to initiate inspections and monitor institutions to prevent crises like the one presented in the Fundación Universitaria San Martín, while giving peace of mind to students on the quality of their education," said the Deputy Minister.
The Superintendency of Higher Education will be responsible for inspecting and monitoring the whole sector. This new body will supervise and regulate all the private and public Higher Education instittutions in the country to ensure the quality of services and intervene in critical situations.
The goal is to increase enrolment from 45% to 84% in higher education by 2034. Further details are given in the original article.
