Education authorities such as the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) have been working to narrow the so-called English divide by providing better English education for children from underprivileged families.

From 22 to 24 July, the Gapyeong branch of the Seoul English Education Center ran a free English program for 103 12-year-olds from Dongjak-gu, Seoul.

Most of the children come from difficult backgrounds; some are orphans from single-parent households, have parents with disabilities, or are parents who defected from North Korea. Because of their circumstances, they have fewer opportunities to learn from comprehensive language education programs with native English teachers. Reports Korea Times
