According to the National Education Sector Plan 2015-19, the new nation-wide kindergarten curriculum will be introduced, followed by phasing in new primary G1-5 curriculum, starting in academic year 2017-18. Four-year middle school curriculum will be introduced from 2018-19, while three year high school curriculum will be phasing in from 2019-20.

The KG+12 implementation will have no effect on students who complete high school from now untill 2019-20 as they will not be exposed to the new curriculum. As a result of these changes there will be no graduates in 2020-21, as the students completing Grade 11 will need to progress to one more year. High school graduates of 2021-22 will have one more additional year of schooling at secondary level, meaning 12 years of schooling in total.

These changes will remain the case until 2026-27. Students completed school in 2028-29 and onwards will have 13 years of schooling with a whole new curriculum, which is aligned with ASEAN standards.

Comments by Myat Lay Tint, Education Programmes Manager (myatlay.tint@mm.britishcouncil.org):

Admission officers of the UK Universities should make themselves aware of this addition to the total years of schooling of high school graduates from Burma, and take into account that their years of schooling will no longer eleven starting from 2021-22 academic year. These changes are an effort to improve the quality of the education system in Myanmar as well as to facilitate the student mobility in the ASEAN region and across the world. This KG+12 system will lessen the headache of admission officers in making entry decision of Myanmar students at their universities. Students coming out of KG+12 system, if given that the new curriculum is up to international standard, can get straight into year one of the UK university instead of having to spend one more year at the foundation level.
