The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in Japan (MEXT) has started accepting applications for TOBITATE! Ryugaku Japan Campaign Scholarships for Japanese senior high school students.

“Tobitate Ryugaku Japan” is a major media campaign run by MEXT to encourage Japanese university and senior high school students to study abroad as part of a strategy to double the number of students studying overseas by 2020.  As part of this campaign, MEXT has launched a special scholarship programme for senior high school students who study abroad.

Applicants for this scholarship can choose any country/region including the UK. In total, 300 students will be selected (150 for the Academic Programme, 50 for the Sports & Arts Programme, 50 for the Professional Programme, and 50 for the International Volunteer Programme).  Study must commence during the period between 15 June 2015 and 31 March 2016.  Support includes pre-departure/debriefing sessions and networking opportunities through an alumni association.

Attracting students of this young age (15-18 year olds) to study in the UK is extremely important because it can have a significant impact on where they choose to study in the future. The British Council Japan has collected information from UK institutions about courses suitable for the scholarship [https://education-services.britishcouncil.org/news/opportunities/call-uk-institutions-provide-information-short-term-courses-japanese-senior-high] and will start listing the selected courses from the end of January 2015. MEXT has a provisional plan to organize a second scholarship programme for senior high school students in early spring 2016.
