Joongang Daily newspaper, one of three major influential newspaper media in Korea, regularly publishes university evaluations in order to provide up-to-date information on universities for students & parents. They have recently released the evaluation results in five humanities and social science subjects – economics, public administration, hotel management/tourism, history and philosophy, including evaluations of 70 universities.

They chose the subjects in consideration of level of interest of students/parents, all five subjects being offered and the availability of quantitative indicators.

They set 11 indicators with 180 scores in history and philosophy, including submissions of research papers, publication & translation of books. They also used the measurement of 14 indications with 200 scores in economics, public administration and hotel management/tourism. The indications cover professor’s research achievements, education quality, provision of scholarships and employment rates.

They rated 'excellent' for the top 10%, 'highly recognised' for up to 25% and 'good' for within 50%. No ratings were given for the rest.

Universities ranked as excellent are as follows, in alphabetical order:

1. Economics : Korea University(Seoul campus), Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University(Dept of global economics) and Yonsei University(Seoul campus)
2. Public Administration : Ewha Womans University, Hanyang University(Seoul campus), Joong Ang University, Korea University(ditto), Yonsei University(ditto)
3. Hotel Management/Tourism : Hanyang University(Seoul campus), Kyunghee University(Dept of Hospitality Management), Pusan National University
4. History : Pusan National University, Seoul National University (Dept of History of Korea, Dept of Oriental History), Sogang University
5. Philosophy : Konkuk University(Seoul campus), Korea university(ditto), Sungkyunkwan University

* Universities with parnethesis have a campus in regions other than Seoul.

On the whole, these ‘excellent’ universities are actively doing research and thus submitting more research papers, receiving more funding from the government, local organisations and industry, providing more scholarships for students and achieving high employment rates. In addition, they are inputting their own specific, unique, tailor-made arrangements to the subject departments, which differentiates themselves from other universities and leads to the achievement of the excellent ranking,

Another update on Korean University Evaluation Results will follow soon.

Please note that the results are for reference only and have some methodology limitations.
