The National Institution for Transforming India Aayog (NITI Aayog), a Government of India policy think-tank established by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has submitted a report to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the India Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) in favour of inviting foreign universities to set up campuses in India.

There are currently 651 foreign education providers in India which have either entered into collaborative twinning programmes, share faculty with partnering institutions or offer distance education.

NITI Aayog has proposed three entry routes into India for foreign institutions and these are as below:

  • Operation of foreign universities in the country should be regulated by law
  • The UGC Act of 1956 should be amended along with the university regulations, to let the foreign universities enter as deemed universities
  • To facilitate joint ventures between Indian and foreign institutions, UGC and AICTE regulations should be modified to add viable co-beneficial arrangements and twinning programmes

This will be the fourth attempt by Indian government to allow entry of foreign institutions on Indian soil.  We are hoping a positive outcome from this attempt as NITI Aayog has suggested loans, scholarships and other forms of financial assistance for interested students based on their merit.

British Council India is keeping track of developments or announcements in this and we shall keep the UK sector updated about the same
