Technology and Innovation Report 2018, released on 15 May by UNCTAD (UN Conference on Trade and Development) declares India as world leaders when it comes to number of students getting bachelor’s degree in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). According to the report, out of about 5 million students who received bachelor’s degree in STEM subjects worldwide in 2012, 29.2 percent were from India.
Citing a 2016 worldwide survey by ManpowerGroup UNCTAD also states "Many countries are witnessing skills shortages in the fields of digital technologies and many employers report difficulties in filling high-skill vacancies". According to the survey done by ManpowerGroup on talent shortage, 40 percent of employers reported difficulties in filling positions.
As per UGC statistics, 10.7 million students opted for science, engineering/technology or computer science in 2016-17 in India, though breakup of undergraduate and postgraduate is not provided.
UK institutions interested to recruit in India in these subjects are encouraged to make the most of this opportunity as students continue to choose job-oriented courses and the practice-based teaching in UK institutions would be a very attractive option.
We have planned subject tours around STEM subjects this year. Please check our calendar to know more.
We will also be happy to organise bespoke faculty meetings, masterclasses and student interactions in STEM if you would like to explore that for your institution.
