The Indian Union Cabinet passed the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) Bill, 2017. This bill empowers the premier management institutes to offer degrees instead of diploma certificates to students. Until now, the 20 premier management institutes in the country had been awarding post-graduate diplomas and fellow programme in management to their students. Though these diplomas are treated as equivalent to MBAs and PhD, they were not universally acceptable.

The elite B-schools will now have complete autonomy combined with adequate accountability. The (IIM) Bill, 2017, does away with the government's role in running premier business schools. All powers will be vested in 15-member boards at every IIM. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commented that the IIM Bill focuses on complete autonomy, effective administration, and more alumni participation.
