This academic year saw the formal introduction of kindergarten as part of basic education. The current education system follows a KG plus 4-4-2, an 11-years system which is not compatible with neighbouring countries’ standards. The government is planning to undertake the major but gradual shift from 5-4-2 to KG plus 5-4-3 under its ‘quick wins’ (2015-16) initiative to introduce KG with the newly developed curriculum with trained teachers at kindergarten in 2016-17 and eventually phasing in one year each at lower and upper secondary level. This change is included Burma’s five-year national education sector plan which is under review and scheduled to be implemented from 2016 to 2021.
This shift aims to narrow the current gap that Myanmar students have if they choose to pursue further studies overseas in the long term. This would be a more favourable situation for UK HEIs receiving students from Burma.
