The German state of Baden-Württemberg, one of the 16 states, all of which have full autonomy over matters of education, will introduce tuition fees for non-EU students from this year.
Non-EU students enrolling from October 2017 will pay tuition fees of €1,500 (c. £1,620) per semester. The fees apply to both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses.
Baden-Württemberg is home to 71 Higher Education Institutions, including three Top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2018: Heidelberg (45), Freiburg (82) and Tübingen (94).
The government of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is also currently preparing to introduce similar fees of €1,500 per semester for non-EU students from 2018. North-Rhine Westphalia is the most populous of the German states and is home to 65 HEIs.
