Three students from Pakistan have successfully been placed in the Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme, for the 2016 session, which has 55 contending international students.
The outstanding students, Ayesha Riaz, Noor Shahzad and Safwan Aziz were selected after an interview cycle conducted in March.
The Gates Scholarship programme was established in 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university. Under this, 95 new scholarships are awarded each year to international applicants to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject at the University of Cambridge.
Ayesha Riaz, a graduate student from Karachi University, said after completion of her postgraduate degree under this scholarship she intended to join her university as a faculty and research staff. Previously she completed her MS in Genetics from Iowa State University under the Fulbright scholarship programme.
Noor Shahzad completed her undergraduate research at Lahore University of Management Sciences. Her research topic was, ‘Urdu women’s digests’ and she plans to further explore these digests through MPhil program in Modern South Asian Studies. She is extremely honoured to achieve a place at University of Cambridge and hopes to learn and contribute to a community of scholars.
The third candidate, Safwan will avail this scholarship to pursue a career in public service, which includes exposure to academic training in policy making and its practice.
