Trinity International College, an education institution based in Kathmandu held their annual career counseling symposium on 6 January 2015. The program was attended by over 1000 students currently in grades 12 and A2 level.
The British Council was invited to the event to speak to the students about study opportunities in the UK. Bickram Shrestha from the Education UK team spoke to the students about applications, requirements and also shared information about living in the UK.
The symposium was a good platform not only to showcase the UK but to also to understand students' preferences in terms of both study destinations and subject choices. According to the guidance counselor, Sandhya Aryal, "All applications that were processed through our institution were for the USA. I have also met students interested in studying in the UK and Australia but they are processing their applications through agents ". The key factors for choosing the US were a wide variety of subjects and majors, simple online application process and the availability of scholarships. In terms of subject choices most students from Trinity seem to prefer computer related degrees and majors. Other popular fields are physics, economics, architecture and design.
With private education providers adding more and better services for their students', guidance counsellors are becoming more common in schools. Events such as the career counselling symposium are also expected to be conducted by more schools and colleges in the future. Participating in such events is an important avenue through which the British Council builds a better understanding of the market and creates stronger local ties.
