British University Viet Nam (BUV), reported as the largest UK TNE provider in Viet Nam, recently announced completion of the first stage of its second phase of expansion. The University expects to accommodate up to 5,000 students by end of the second phase of expansion and 10,000 students by the end of the final expansion according to the University’s investment plan. BUV is delivering 11 undergraduate and one postgraduate programme through four academic schools (business; computing and innovative industries; creative industries; and hospitality and tourism) with degrees awarded by the University of London and Staffordshire University. The University was accredited by QAA in 2022.

What does this mean for the UK?

The increase in demand for enrolment at BUV indicates the growing preference of Vietnamese students for in-country TNE programmes. Over the last five years (2015-2021) UK TNE programmes in Viet Nam reported an average annual increase of 11% in student numbers* while Australia’s RMIT University, the first international university in Viet Nam, has reportedly reached its full capacity with 10,000 students enrolled and is now looking to expand into the north region of Viet Nam. UK universities should seek to capitalise on this increased demand from Vietnamese students and actively explore opportunities to partner with Vietnamese universities/BUV through the delivery of joint training programmes or articulation.
