National Parliament on 7 March 2017 passed the Bangladesh Accreditation Council Bill 2017 aimed at ensuring quality of higher education at public and private universities.
While placing the bill, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said it will facilitate extensive monitoring of academic activities at the universities.
As per the bill, the council will be an autonomous statutory body headed by a chairman with four full-time and eight part-time members.

In April 2012, the education ministry approved the primary draft of the bill and sought opinions of ministries, universities, and departments concerned. The draft of the bill was approved by the cabinet on 28 March 2016
This bill will ensure development of high quality students in the Bangladeshi higher education system and equip them with the aptitude and vision to study overseas.
