Wider Europe – Gateway to the UK

Wider Europe's 'Gateway to the UK’ event is new and exciting

We are organising our first virtual event in the Wider Europe region where you can have one-to-one meetings with over 5,000 students and their parents from Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan markets.

The online event will take place over a whole month in November with representatives from participating institutions having the opportunity to attend up to 300 meetings over the course of the month. Alongside the one-to-one meetings we will have a series of subject specific webinars, enabling institutions to put themselves at the forefront of a subjects promotion. Your engagement with Wider European students will also continue beyond the event as all webinars will be recorded and sent to registered students and schools.

Market highlights from the region:

Turkey: Due to the highly competitive nature of the graduate employment market and the uncertain quality of education at home, international study will continue to be a trend. The Ministry of National Education (MoNE) offers around 1,000 scholarships annually. According to UCAS, applications for undergraduate programmes have tripled in the last 10 years.

Russia: The UK, with 3,665 students in 2018-19 (HESA), is one of the most preferable destinations for studying abroad among Russian students and parents. The “strategic academic leadership programme” is a new reform in Russian higher education and based on the importance of science and higher education for achieving national development goals. Russia aims to be in the top five world leading economies by advanced development of innovative business.

Kazakhstan: Outbound student mobility has increased by 140 per cent in the last ten years in Kazakhstan. The Bolashaq Presidential Scholarship will also be continuing its generous funding of students who go abroad for studies despite Covid-19.

Uzbekistan: Rising incomes and a severe capacity shortage in the domestic education system are creating opportunities for international education. The El Yurt Foundation set up by the government offers around 1,000 scholarships annually to academics, researchers and business representatives to benefit from professional development programmes including short courses, Masters’ and PhD programmes abroad.
