Mission overview

The UK Government’s Science and Innovation Network (SIN) and British Council, in partnership with the Saudi Patient Safety Centre (SPSC), will support the development of the program for the 2nd International Patient Safety Conference (7-9 December 2019), aiming to offer a platform where policymakers, researchers, industry and various stakeholders can come together to share best practices and contribute to wider thinking on improving patient safety and delivering better outcomes (research , policy and commercial outcomes).

Forum Objectives:

• Bring together UK-KSA leading Patient Safety stakeholders for knowledge exchange and the identification of future collaborative initiatives.
• Understand the current status and future aspirations for Patient Safety in UK and KSA, focusing on commercial and research priorities.
• Develop an understanding of how UK leading research can be applied in the KSA.
• Identify a funding road map for possible future collaborative initiatives.

The forum will incorporate government-to-government engagement, along with participation from key industry partners. The forum will be delivered through a series of keynote talks, short presentations and panel discussions with UK and KSA stakeholders.

An evening gala dinner reception will also be held on the 7^th December for networking discussions.

Context

During HRH Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's last visit to the UK, Saudi Arabia and the UK confirmed and reinforced the relations between the two Kingdoms, and committed to developing a stronger and more strategic partnership to enhance mutual interests such as healthcare, education and entertainment. Saudi recognizes British expertise in healthcare, hence both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation in this field through a Memoranda of Understanding.

This UK-KSA strategic MOU on Healthcare underpins cooperation in the fields of training, primary health care, health investment, digital healthcare, and others. The United Kingdom has also appointed a Special Representative on Healthcare to support Vision 2030 (to be announced).

In March 2019, Saudi Arabia hosted the forth global ministerial summit on patient safety. The summit was a continuation of the patient safety summit series which was originally started by the United Kingdom and Germany with the endorsement of the world health organisation back in 2016.

The 4th Global Summit on Patient Safety 2019, held last March in Jeddah convened ministers of health, governors, policymakers, scientists and clinicians from all over the world who formally committed to improve the safety of care globally by, officially endorsing the Jeddah Declaration for Patient Safety (Attached).​ The former UK Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt also participated in the summit.

The 2n​d SPSC International Patient Safety Conference 2019 aims to trigger for patient safety capacity building, provide a platform to share experiences, discuss cutting-edge research on patient safety, build relationships and to disseminate patient safety-related knowledge, with focus on the Jeddah Declaration Moving Forward.  The scientific program will offer a fantastic opportunity to discuss about:

• Actualizing Jeddah Declaration on Patient Safety
• Patient Safety and Vision 2030
• Patient Safety 2.0

The forum will give you an excellent opportunity to showcase your expertise and value add to key contacts internationally and in Saudi Arabia.

The forum will provide the first opportunity to discuss bilateral mutual areas of interests and to identify possible areas for future collaborative activities.

The UK Science and Innovation Network wishes to encourage future bilateral partnerships in Patient Safety, thus we welcome senior representatives from organizations with expertise in patient safety to discuss capacity for future partnerships and/or technical collaboration in one or more below areas:

Cost

Funding will be provided for one organization representative. The UK Science and Innovation Network will cover the cost of: return flights; up to 3 nights’ accommodation, including breakfast; return hotel airport transfers; lunch and dinner reception on 7^th December; and visas. Any other subsistence or costs are to be paid by the delegate.
