In September 2023 a 30-strong delegation of UK university senior leaders visited India to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with Indian universities in the areas of Transnational Education and Research. Their visit came at an opportune moment. The Mutual Recognition of Qualification Agreement had been signed off, the foreign collaboration agreement through joint, dual and twinning degrees had come into effect and the GIFT city regulation for the set up of overseas education centres had been announced. The Indian government had begun the implementation of the NEP 2020 recommendation on internationalisation and the liberalisation of regulation was expected to stimulate several collaborations and partnerships between the UK and India as well as other countries.

Finally, on October 23, the University Grants Commission launched the International branch campus regulation. India is alive with opportunities at the moment and many UK universities have already been engaged in moving ahead with forming new collaborations and partnerships. The purpose of this spotlight is to focus attention on the current policy and regulatory landscape and demand for higher education collaboration in India particularly to understand what has worked for universities and what has not as well as what we can do collectively as the UK education sector to mutually beneficially engage with the Indian education sector.
