The first of  the 4 new  National Institutes of Design has been  set up at Vijayawada in 2015. In the initial phases of its operation NID Vijayawada is seeking international cooperation from UK institutions/universities to support and assist it’s growth and development through building capacity of faculty in teaching, assessment and research , curriculum development, strategic planning and delivery, advice on infrastructure facilities like labs/studios and quality assurance systems.

The UK university should be willing to share expertise to conduct and evaluate academic programmes and develop faculty resources for teaching initially for the following academic streams/disciplines:

(a) Industrial Design

(b) Communication Design

(c) Textile & Apparel Design

(d) IT Integrated Design

The Indian Ministry of Commerce  will fund the project, through the National Institute of Design Ahmedabad,  to support the development of this new National Institute of Design.  Project activities will include support and assistance from a UK university or a consortium of universities to:

  • Create an institute with a distinctive ethos and philosophy of its own
  • Build an nationally relevant, international focused curriculum
  • Help address the quantitative and qualitative shortage of trained professional staff
  • Build sustainable capacity within the new entity

The institution expects to have a student population of around 700 over the next five years. A  four-year Undergraduate Programme started in 2015 and plans to soon start  a 2.5 years Postgraduate Programme and build research capability.
