Youth workforce to lead future development in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh is a country with high youth demography as per a recent report by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). According to the report, Bangladesh needs to use this demographic opportunity to promote the country to create more and better employment opportunities. Participation of women in the general workforce is also expected to increase. Investment in the productive sectors also needs to improve.

49 per cent people in Bangladesh are under the age of 24 years.  There are 105.6 million people working, which is 66 per cent of the total population.
In the next 15 years, that means by 2030 the working population will increase to 129.8 million, which will be 70 per cent of the total population of the country. Only 7 percent of the country is elderly or people over the age of 60. By the year 2030 and 2050 this percentage will increase to 12 and 22 percent respectively.
The report has been developed by analysts in the UNDP New York office.  The team leader and main author of the report Thangabhela Palanibhela commented, “a large portion of the population is unemployed in the region, including Bangladesh.”
A portion of the youth population is dependent on the parents' income and is struggling to  find work. Lack of employability may also become a cause of political instability.
According to the UNDP report, between 2016 and 2030 Bangladesh needs to create 25 million jobs, which means 1.6 million new jobs should be available every year.
