USD 65 million in credit was approved by the World Bank for the Nepal Higher Education Reforms Project on 19 February. The project is expected to benefit over 500,000 current and future students of the public universities and affiliated campuses by supporting reforms for ‘improving quality, relevance, and efficiency of higher education; and to assist under-privileged students for equitable access.’

Some of the different areas the project aims to implement reforms in include strengthening of the examination system, greater institutional autonomy, effective public funding of higher education institutions, institutionalisation of the national accreditation system, expansion of new academic programmes and research and financial support for under-privileged students.

Things are still at a very nascent stage to forecast what impact access to this funding will mean for foreign HEIs but it is likely that some of the public Universities will reach out to foreign Universities, particularly with regard to assistance in expanding academic programmes and research activities.
