According to a government decree, higher education institutions of Vietnam will undergo stratification and ranking following a set of criteria set by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) - reports VietNamNet Bridge.

More than 470 universities will be stratified into three classes i.e. research, application and practice, depending on their operation and development orientation.

Based on their achievements, universities will be ranked first class (highest), secondary class or third class (lowest), with around 30 per cent of the 470 universities in each class.

Employment rate among graduates will be a key criterion for the ranking.

The stratification and ranking will be undertaken every ten and two years respectively.

The decree will come into effect on 25 October 2015.

Pros and cons both arise for this decree.  The pros side believe it will help university to define their development objectives and orientation and enable employers to approach the right university for staff recruitment.  Some experts argue that as universities will have to do self-assessment for the stratification and ranking, it will be not objective while placing a burden and difficulties for them in the implementation.
